An overview

Mount Meru is Tanzania’s second-highest mountain at 4,566 meters, offering stunning views of Mount Kilimanjaro, diverse wildlife, and a quieter, less crowded trekking experience. The climb passes through rainforest, heath, moorland, and alpine desert, often with wildlife sightings along the lower slopes.

Day 01 :

Moshi/Arusha – Momella Gate (1,500m) – Miriakamba Hut (2,500m)

Drive time: 1–2 hours from Arusha / 2.5 hours from Moshi
Hiking time: 4–5 hours
Distance: 10 km
Habitat: Rainforest

Transfer to Arusha National Park for registration at Momella Gate. Your trek starts with an armed ranger escort due to possible encounters with buffalo, giraffes, zebras, and antelope. Hike through forest and open glades to Miriakamba Hut.

Day 02 :

Miriakamba Hut to Saddle Hut (3,570m)

Hiking time: 3–4 hours
Distance: 8 km
Habitat: Heath and moorland

Ascend steeply through lush forest and giant heather to the saddle between Meru’s main summit and Little Meru. Arrive at Saddle Hut by early afternoon. Optional short hike to Little Meru (3,820m) for acclimatization and sunset views.

Day 03 :

Saddle Hut to Summit (4,566m) to Miriakamba Hut

Hiking time: 10–12 hours
Distance: 18 km
Habitat: Alpine desert

Start the summit push around midnight. Trek through switchbacks, Rhino Point, and Cobra Point to reach Meru’s crater rim and summit at Socialist Peak. Enjoy sunrise views over Kilimanjaro and the crater before descending back to Saddle Hut for a break, then continue to Miriakamba Hut.

Day 04 :

Miriakamba Hut to Momella Gate – Return to Moshi/Arusha

Hiking time: 2–3 hours
Distance: 10 km

Complete the descent through the forest to Momella Gate. Transfer back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha. Option to stop at viewpoints or local attractions en route.
